The East West Eye Institute is a complete eye care facility. We have experts in LASIK and other forms of refractive surgery, as well as specialists in the fields of glaucoma, corneal disease and oculoplastics (plastic surgery of the eyelids). Our doctors utilize advanced laser technology to treat conditions such as diabetic retinopathy, various forms of glaucoma, and secondary cataracts.
We also offer eyelid and facial rejuvenation through the use of BOTOX, blepharoplasty or a combination of these procedures. Our doctors have performed thousands of cataract operations and utilize topical anesthesia with no-stitch, no-needle techniques to optimize patient comfort.
In addition, we use the latest technology for cataract surgery such as the ReSTOR Multifocal IOL which minimizes the need for glasses post-operatively and allows the patient to have both near and distance vision.

Glasses and Contact Lenses

We also provide the full spectrum of glasses and contact lens care. We have board certified optometrists and licensed opticians onsite that can prescribe and fit you with glasses and/or specialty contact lenses, and answer any questions you may have about which is right for you. We have a lab on the premises, as well as a varied selection of designer frames, kids, sports and safety glasses frames.

Fred Kurata, MD, MS, President

Fred Kurata, M.D., M.S. is a board certified ophthalmologist who specializes in glaucoma, as well as cataracts, and refractive surgery. He attended the University of Hawaii, where he attained his Medical Degree as well as his Masters in Physiology. At the Scheie Eye Institute at the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Kurata completed his residency in pathology and ophthalmology as well as his fellowship in glaucoma. He has been practicing for over 20 years and is associated with such societies as the American Medical Association, the American Glaucoma Society, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, ARVO, and the Los Angeles County Medical Association.

Jean Katow, MD

Dr. Katow is a board-certified ophthalmologist who specializes in general ophthalmology, ophthalmic plastics, and reconstructive surgery. She obtained her Bachelors degree at the University of California, Los Angeles and subsequently attended the University of California, Davis for her Medical Degree. She completed her residency in ophthalmology at the University of Louisville and her fellowship in ophthalmic plastics at the University of Cincinnati. Dr. Katow has been practicing for nearly 20 years and is involved in humanitarian missions to foreign countries in need of medical care. She is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the California Association of Ophthalmology, and the Los Angeles Ophthalmological Society.

Nicholas P. Marsico, MD

Nicholas P. Marsico, M.D., FACS is a board certified ophthalmologist who performs all aspects of surgery on the anterior segment of the eye including cataract extraction, glaucoma surgery and various forms of corneal transplantation including penetrating keratoplasty and DSAEK.  He is fellowship trained in LASIK laser vision correction as well as other forms of refractive surgery and in the treatment of corneal diseases.  In addition, Dr. Marsico manages general ophthalmology patients such as those with diabetic eye disease and macular degeneration utilizing advanced lasers and the latest treatment techniques to optimize patient outcomes.

Dr. Marsico received his undergraduate education at the Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio where he graduated Summa Cum Laude with Honors and was inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa national academic honor society.  Thereafter, he received his M.D. degree from the Ohio State University College of Medicine.  He went on to complete his ophthalmology residency at Boston University and subspecialty fellowship training in Cornea / External Diseases and Refractive Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Eye and Ear Institute.  After practicing in such places as Ohio and North Carolina, Dr. Marsico joined the East West Eye Institute in July of 2004.  He is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, the International Society of Refractive Surgery, the California Academy of Ophthalmology, and the Los Angeles Society of Ophthalmology.

Alex Liu, MD, MPH

Dr. Liu is board certified and has trained in the West Coast, New Orleans, New York and in Florida at some of the top medical centers in the country. After specializing his residency training to surgery of the eye and eyelids, he further trained in two fellowships; one under the mentorship of  a general plastic surgeon, and another under an Oculoplastic & Liposculpture specialist. Dr. Liu was trained by some of the top physicians in the country, giving him an advantage of having a broad education in the fields of facial plastic surgery, minimally-invasive cosmetic surgery, and liposculpture of the body and face.

Albert Davis, M.D.

Albert Davis, M.D. is a board certified ophthalmologist who specializes in general ophthalmology, cataracts as well as refractive surgery. He attended Queens College for his undergraduate education and earned his Medical Degree at Howard University College of Medicine. His residency was completed at Jules Stein Eye Institute at UCLA and at the Long Beach Veterans Administration. Dr. Davis served as a surgeon in the United States Public Health Service. He has been practicing for almost 30 years and during this tenure, he has served as a clinical instructor at the UCLA Medical School, a consulting physician at the Veterans Hospital in Long Beach, as well as an Assistant Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at UC Irvine. Dr. Davis is a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology as well as a Fellow of the American College Surgeons

Joseph Davidson, MD, FRCSC, FACS

Joseph K. Davidson, M.D., F.R.C.S.C., F.A.C.S. is a board certified ophthalmologist and ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgeon. He is one of the most highly trained and credentialed surgeons in North America for cosmetic and non-cosmetic surgery of the eyes and upper face. He has completed three subspecialty fellowships (medicine’s highest form of formal education). He is board certified in both the United States and Canada. And he has distinguished himself at several of North America’s most prestigious institutions, including Harvard University, Georgetown University, McGill University, and the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology. Dr. Davidson takes pride in his innovative techniques and excellent results for both cosmetic and non-cosmetic surgery of the eyelids, eye sockets and tear drains. He also enjoys traveling, computer programming, walking, and reading.

James Bryan, MD

James Bryan, M.D. is a board certified Ophthalmologist with over 40 years of experience. He received his undergraduate education from Stanford University, then subsequently his Medical degree from Cornell University. After completing a surgical internship at The New York Hospital, he served in the military as an Eye Surgeon in the Army. Dr. Bryan then went on to complete his Ophthalmological Residency at Mayo Clinic. Dr. Bryan was previously a Director at the Medical Eye Services of California, INC, a Chief of Staff at Little Company of Mary Hospital, and Past President of the Southern California Eye Bank and Research Foundation. Dr. Bryan is a member of the American Association of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, and a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, to name a few.

Steven Kurata, OD

Dr. Kurata is an optometrist who received his education at the Southern California College of Optometry. He specializes in contact lens exams as well as fitting glasses. He has been practicing for over 26 years and has been associated with such organizations as the American Optometric Association, the California Optometric Association, the Los Angeles County Optometric Association, the Japanese American Optometric Society, as well as holding the position of President for the Asian American Optometric Society. He is currently on the Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees for the Southern California College of Optometry.

Eric K. Miyamoto, OD

Dr. Miyamoto is an optometrist specializing in primary care. This includes giving routine eye examinations, fitting contact lenses and prescribing eyeglasses. He received his Bachelor of Science in Biology at the University of California at Irvine and his Doctor of Optometry at the Illinois College of Optometry. He has been practicing for over 12 years. Dr. Miyamoto is fluent in Portuguese, Japanese and adequate in Spanish. He is excellent in verbal English communication. Dr. Miyamoto has been a volunteer for the Optometric Service for Humanity and was nominated to the "Outstanding Young Men of America."

Lynn Kurata, OD FAAO

Dr. Kurata is an optometrist who received her BS in Biology, with Honors, at Seattle University, Seattle, WA, and a MS in Physiology, with Honors, at the University of Hawaii, Honolulu, HI. She received her Doctor of Optometry at the Pennsylvania College of Optometry. She is licensed to practice in California and has been practicing optometry for over 20 years. She specializes in Low Vision rehabilitation and has a Certificate of Clinical Excellence in Low Vision from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry, Wm. Feinbloom Eye Institute. She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry, and associated with the American Optometric Association, the California Optometric Association. She served as President of the Asian American Optometric Society in 1990.

Lily Mac, OD

Lily Mac, O.D. is an optometrist who completed her undergraduate degree in biology at UCLA and continued her studies to become an optometrist graduating from Southern California College of Optometry. As a first generation college graduate, she enjoys working with the diverse ethnicity of patients in the area and is able to communicate to patients in English, Cantonese, some Mandarin, and some Spanish. As an intern at the Optometric Center of Los Angeles, she served for the disadvantaged community, provided care at the Center for the Partially Sighted for low vision care, and at the Veteran’s Hospital. After graduating in 2008, she practiced at a private optometry practice in the San Gabriel Valley, providing primary eye care, contact lenses, and glasses to a predominantly Chinese patient population. She is currently involved in eye allergy studies as an investigating optometrist.
